video still plays 5.1 surround sound bad speakers cheap?

I was watching a movie on my 720p HDTV yesterday (on my PS3). The picture was unbelievable, but I kept out the music, sounds and noises sounded devices booming, but the voice actors / Comment seemed hollow and metallic. Is it because my speakers are not surround sound and the video stream Dolby 5.1? The situation will improve if I buy him? Where can I change the settings to get some more balanced sound? I'm just using 2 speakers (Sony) which I think are generally Laptop with a sub and 2 speakers bit, not a receiver.

Most discs with surround sound (5.1) send most of voice / speech front center channel, then with stereo speakers, you miss much of the essential information.
