Does my Yamaha HTR-6240 receiver input convert video?
Does my Yamaha HTR-6240 Receiver convert my video input component to HDMI? I try to hook my Xbox 360 component video at up having to buy a long cable component and running it through a wall in another room.
No, the upconversion process occurs in the DVD / Blu Ray Player. The receiver is just a pass through for video signals, the processing performed only by the receiver audio. That is why they are called receivers amplifiers and not anymore. They amplify sound but if they called an amp then it would mean that the video is amplified that is not also the upconversion term is not really a true representation of what happens. It implies that the image is upconverted 480i to 480p or quality HD 720p or 1080p. This is not true and misleading. Enhancement is more specific terms that more accurately describes what happens. When you magnify something, it is slightly distorted and the distortion is increased by any factor that is used in the process. So if you see a standard DVD image enhanced in 720p, you may not notice any distortion. but if you take the image and uopscale to 1080p, you'll notice on most 1080p TVs, distortions.
