Mordaunt Short

Updated home theater?

Hello I currently have a Home Theater system and I need to update due the fact that I now have an LCD TV and HD BlueRay player and my equipment is very basic system. my current equipment. Yamaha RX-V657 receiver Left & Right 905c Mordaunt Short 914 Mordaunt short center and rear YAMAHA NS - 333 (GOT them very cheap) Mordaunt Short MS907 subwoofer I think buying an Onkyo TX-SR805 receiver. Is this a decent choice of amplifier? speakers and i have not a good enough job or will I have to upgrade them also Well? any info would be greatly appreciated cheers

According to the Blu-ray you have purchased the only benefit you may get the upgrade is the ability to switch HDMI ... in other words of convenience, but not really performance related. The RX-V657 has analog audio inputs, multi-channel. If the BD player has multichannel analog outputs and a built in decoders for advanced audio (DTS-HD Master for example), you can enjoy without HDMI input receiver. As for the video, if your 1080p TV over the BD live HDTV via HDMI, but if you can cable 720p/1080i via component BD player to receiver and component from receiver to the HDTV without losing image quality, and preserve the simplicity of switching audio and video using the input selector on the receiver. Note that many professional installers HT son again with component cable, preferably to HDMI, as it is less susceptible to problems while providing video quality equivalent to all but the most discriminate viewer. Also note the advanced audio formats are an improvement over "normal" DTS or DD, but the difference is relatively small and not even perceived by many people. However, if you decide to upgrade (I was in a similar situation a year ago, and chose to upgrade ... but you know Now the benefits have been relatively low) Make sure the receiver you choose has HDMI 1.3 support and transcode video from composite and component HDMI to allow you to treat all sources through the receiver and out via HDMI to your HDTV. As for the make / model, I suggests to some reading on the AVS Forum (1st link), there are discussions on lot of models (2nd link is to Onyko 805) and you can read what owners really think. In general, it is really up to what features you want from one of the major brands are good models reliable which are more or less equivalent in the same price range. Personally, I've been lucky with Pioneer, but there are many fans of Onkyo (and Denon, and Yamaha, etc..) As for speakers, I'd hang onto you Mordant Shorts, but consider upgrading the surrounds as the closest of them as possible (you can use something for the surrounds, but there is supposed to benefit all beings of the same family to ensure "the timbre matching"). If you have a great listening environment enough to consider adding another pair of surround sound and switch to 7.1 sound. However, you may find to your Yamaha NS-333 Existing (or better stereo speakers) in a second room and plugging in Zone 2 offers more advantages (ability to listen a second stereo source in a second location) more than 2-channel surround.
